Week 1 task 3 Rob Ghiretti

Information systems are applied in organizations to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the company.  There are many different types of information systems out there that companies are using to enhance their company.  Some types of information systems would be Transaction Processing Systems, Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems, Management Information Systems, and Office Automation Systems.  The system I will choose to discuss is the Expert System.  An expert system is software that uses knowledge base that excels in the field of problem solving.  This helps in situations where a number of experts would have to be consulted about an issue because the issue is solved quicker and easier by using an Expert System.  Expert systems can usually be found in a particular problem domain.  Some keys to creating a the Expert System would include getting the knowledge base, knowledge engineering (the process of gathering the knowledge), and placing the system in a problem solving situation as an aid to human workers.  The value of expert systems to an organization is carrying intelligence and information and providing this information to other members of the organization.  Expert Systems are most valuable to organizations that have a high-level of experience with information that is not easily transferred to other members of the organization.  The user interface, the knowledge base, and the inference engine are all major components to the expert system.  The user interface is the means of the community between a user and the expert systems problem-solving process.  The knowledge base is what stores all of the facts and information used by the system in a problem domain.  The inference engine is the program that figures out which knowledge is appropriate for the knowledge base.  The inference engine gathers new knowledge by applying logical processing and problem solving strategies.
