General Systems Concepts

“An information system is a discipline bridging the business field and well-defined computer science field that are evolving toward a new scientific study (1).” These systems are a newer technology that is helping the business world drastically because everything is done quickly and more easily. Information systems are changing businesses all over the world by making tedious jobs more simple and capable of being done quicker. Information systems take information and use it to help the company achieve its goals.

Business information systems are a common type of information system. A business information system is used in a business organization that is designed for mobile commerce. Mobile commerce is a transaction that is conducted anywhere at any time. Business information systems sometimes process transactions, deliver information, and support decisions that the company makes. Business information systems have benefitted businesses is many ways. Allowing the companies to make transactions in places other than the office, having these transactions done quicker, and having more information handy at all times are three ways that this type of information system has greatly improved businesses.

Electronic and mobile commerce is a major part of the business information systems. “Electric commerce consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks (2).” Another form of commerce would be mobile commerce. This is “the ability to conduct commerce using a mobile device, such as a mobile phone, a Personal digital assistant PDA, a Smartphone, or other emerging mobile equipment such as dash top mobile devices (3).” “Mobile commerce was brought up in 1997. The first mobile phone banking service was launched in 1997 by Merita Bank of Finland, also using SMS (3).”

Enterprise systems (ES) are large-scale, integrated application-software packages that use the computational, data storage, and data transmission power of modern information technology to support business processes, information flows, reporting, and data analytics within and between complex organizations (4). These systems have transformed over the years but people and businesses still manage to use them everyday. Enterprise systems support a mass requirement rather than a single department or group in a business. An enterprise system will have a large impact on a business whether it works or not, regardless there will be a change. The impact is usually referred to in dollars whether it increases sales or decreases
